Alisson goal: Manuel Neuer messaged Liverpool goalkeeper to congratulate him for ‘phenomenal’ header – The Athletic

What did Neuer say?

Speaking to The Athletic, Neuer said: “I congratulated him and we exchanged a few messages.

“Every goalkeeper dreams of scoring the winning goal. Usually, you’re behind when the goalkeeper comes up, but Liverpool had to win to qualify for the Champions League of course. Phenomenal. What an amazing header.

“I’m so pleased for him. He’s a very nice guy and easy to get along with. He deserves that moment.”

How did Alisson react?

Alisson paid tribute to his late father immediately after the victory in an emotional interview. His father, Jose Agostinho Becker, tragically died after drowning in a lake in Brazil in February.

“I hope he was here to see it, I’m sure he is celebrating with God at his side,” Alisson said.

“I’m too emotional. This is for everything that happened with me, with my family. Football is my life.

“We are fighting, sometimes we are fighting and things are not happening. I am happy to help them because we are fighting together. We have a struggle to achieve the Champions League. We won it once and we know everything starts with the qualification.

“I can’t be more happy than I am now.”

When else have goalkeepers scored in the Premier League?

Five other goalkeepers have found the back of the net in the Premier League era.

Asmir Begovic scored from just outside his six-yard box during Stoke’s fixture against Southampton in the 2013-14 season.

A season before that, Everton’s Tim Howard saw a similarly-distanced effort find the back of the net against Bolton, although his side still lost 2-1.

In March 2007, former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson scored with a free-kick that fortuitously ended up past Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.

In the 2003-04 season, Blackburn’s Brad Friedel’s 89th minute tap-in from a corner looked to have given the club a valuable point against Charlton at The Valley. Moments later, however, Friedel conceded as Blackburn lost 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

The first ever goalkeeper to score in the Premier League was Peter Schmeichel against Everton in October 2001. Much like Alisson, Schmeichel roamed up to the opposite end of the field to volley home for Villa. His goal, however, proved to be a mere consolation — making Alisson’s winner the most dramatic goalkeeping goal in Premier League history.
